  • Take Care of Yourself
    Allow yourself time to grieve and seek emotional support from friends, family, or grief counseling.
  • Notify Financial Institutions
    Inform the benefactors banks, credit unions, and financial institutions of their passing. Request to freeze any accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Assess Debt and Liabilities
    Determine if the benefactor had any outstanding debts or liabilities that may affect the estate’s values.
  • Review Will and Estate Planning
    Consult with an attorney to understand the contents of the will and navigate the legal aspects of estate distribution.
  • Transfer Ownership of Assets
    If assets are left to you, transfer the ownership of those assets in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Set Up Your Own Financial Plan
    With the inheritance, consider creating or updating your financial plan to manage the newfound wealth responsibly.
  • Communicate With Other Beneficiaries
    If there are other beneficiaries involved, maintain open communication to ensure a smooth distribution of assets.
