Your Essential Financial Guide for 2024: Key Dates and Tax Changes

May 10, 2024

The financial landscape of 2024 brings numerous deadlines and changes that could impact your financial planning. From tax rates to retirement contributions, staying informed can help you make better decisions throughout the year. Here’s what you need to know.

Important Tax Dates for 2024

April 15 remains a crucial date, marking the deadline for filing your Form 1040 or requesting an extension. This date also caps contributions to Roth IRAs, traditional IRAs, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), Solo 401(k)s, SEPs, and Keoghs for the 2023 fiscal year.

For those paying estimated taxes, the first installment is due on April 15, with subsequent payments scheduled for June 17 and September 16. If you’ve filed for an extension, remember to submit your complete tax returns by October 15.

Federal Income Tax Brackets and Standard Deductions

Federal tax brackets for 2024 have been updated. For singles, the tax rates start at 10% for incomes up to $11,600, scaling up to 37% for incomes exceeding $609,351. Married couples filing jointly will see a similar progression, starting from 10% on incomes up to $23,200 to 37% on incomes over $731,201.

The standard deduction has risen across the board to accommodate inflation, with singles claiming $14,600 and married couples filing jointly at $29,200. Those over 65 or blind may qualify for additional deductions.

Changes in Retirement Contributions and Limits

Retirement planning sees a boost with increased contribution limits in 2024. For example, the limit for 401(k), 403(b), 457, and Thrift Savings Plans has been set at $23,000, with a catch-up contribution limit of $7,500 for those aged 50 and above.

IRA and Roth IRA contributors can set aside up to $7,000, with a $1,000 catch-up limit. These adjustments provide a great opportunity to maximize your retirement savings.

Medicare and Health Deductions

Medicare premiums and deductibles see adjustments; for instance, Part A premiums, for those who pay, are pegged at $505. The Part B standard monthly premium will be approximately $174.70, depending on your income level.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) have increased their contribution limits to $4,150 for individuals and $8,300 for families, with a $1,000 catch-up contribution for those aged 55 or older.

Estate and Gift Tax Exclusions

For 2024, the unified estate and gift tax exclusion has escalated to $13,610,000, offering significant planning opportunities for high-net-worth individuals to manage their estate tax liabilities.

Navigating the financial requirements of 2024 requires awareness and proactive management. From keeping up with tax deadlines to maximizing retirement contributions, understanding these essential financial figures will help ensure that you are well-prepared for the fiscal year.
