Crypto Currency Scams Targeted at the Elderly

July 10, 2023

It’s not a secret: cryptocurrency is a hot topic right now. It’s new, exciting, and – potentially – very profitable. But as the interest in cryptocurrency grows, so do scams. And sadly, senior citizens are often the targets.

Elderly people are often seen as easy targets for scams because they may not be as familiar with new technology as younger people are. The result? A startling increase in elder crypto scams.

What’s Going On?

The scammers are slick. They’ll use everything from cold calls and emails to fake websites and social media messages to trick the elderly into investing in fake cryptocurrencies. They’ll promise huge profits, and sadly, many seniors believe them and lose their money.

Here’s an example. Let’s say a scammer calls a senior citizen, claiming to represent a legit cryptocurrency company. They’ll convince the victim to invest a large sum of money into what they say is a surefire investment. But when the senior tries to withdraw their money, they find out it’s all a scam. Their money is gone, and there’s little they can do to get it back.

Protecting Our Elders

Here’s the good news: we can protect our elders from these scams. It all starts with education. Teach your elderly loved ones about the dangers of crypto scams. Let them know that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Next, make sure they’re cautious about who they’re giving their money to. If they get a call from someone asking for a large investment, tell them to hang up and call the company directly. This way, they can be sure they’re talking to a real representative.
